Flemish Government approves "Impulse program space economy"

16.04.2021

On April 2, the Flemish Government approved the "impulse program space economy". This program will run over the period 2021-2024 and consists of five sections: (1) a supporting triple helix platform - Flanders Space, (2) focus on talent - guiding researchers to space research, (3) focus on competitiveness and entrepreneurship, (4) focus on international programs and (5) focus on science communication.

Already in early 2018, VARIO put this topic on the agenda with its advice 'Flanders' Space: a strategy for the Flemish Space Economy'. Since then, several follow-up steps have been taken to support the space economy. The innovative business network 'Space 4.0' was launched in 2018. In April 2019, the Flemish Parliament adopted a resolution on the development and valorization of the Flemish space economy. This ambition for the space domain was included in the Flemish Coalition Agreement 2019 - 2024 and the Policy Note EWI 2019 -2024. A task force on space and defense was set up in June 2020, which analysed the space spearhead activities. Based on this analysis, the Flemish Government now approved the 'impulse program space economy'. VARIO welcomes the initiative of the Flemish Government to support the space economy.
